Driver Killed, 2-Year-Old Survives Oxnard Wreck

OXNARD (CBSLA) – A 30-year-old man was killed and a 2-year-old boy was injured when a pickup truck slammed into a tree in Oxnard early Thursday morning, shutting down a major roadway for hours.

A 1998 Dodge Ram carrying the two crashed at about 4 a.m. in a center divider in the 1600 block of Rose Avenue.

The driver was found trapped in the truck and pronounced dead at the scene, Oxnard police said. No names were released.

The boy, who was in a child safety seat in the front passenger seat, was rushed to a Ventura County Medical Center with minor injuries.

Rose Avenue was initially shut down in both directions from Gonzales Road to Cesar Chavez Avenue. The northbound lanes were reopened at 7:20 a.m., but the southbound lanes remained closed for several hours. The roadway has since fully reopened.

Investigators believe alcohol and speed may have contributed to the crash, police said.
