Driver Gets More Than 3 Years For Stealing UPS Gun Shipments

RIVERSIDE (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a former UPS driver in Southern California has been sentenced to nearly 3½ years in prison for stealing dozens of guns that were later sold on the black market.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Curtis Hays II, 37, of Rancho Cucamonga was sentenced Monday in Riverside federal court for conspiracy, firearms theft and theft of interstate shipments.

Prosecutors say Hays stole 72 guns from a UPS shipping hub in Ontario in 2012 that were destined for a hunting and fishing store.

Hays gave the guns to a friend who sold them illegally.

Prosecutors say one of the guns was used to fire at police after a high-speed chase, but that no officers were injured.

UPS fired Hays after his arrest.
