Driver Dies Of Injuries From Collision With Metrolink Train

BURBANK (CBSLA.com) — Police say a motorist whose car was crushed by a Metrolink train in Burbank has died.

The crash happened about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Buena Vista Street and San Fernando Road, Burbank police Officer Joshua Kendrick said.

Fawaz Khalil, 79, of Burbank, was taken to a hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.

Khalil, who was alone in the car, was driving south on Buena Vista Street when the crash happened.

"Initial reports indicate (Khalil) attempted to circumvent the activated railroad crossing arms when the vehicle was struck by the train," Kendrick said.

There were about 135 passengers on board the southbound Metrolink train, Kendrick said.

"While there were no significant injuries, a few passengers were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries," he said.

Anyone with more information on the crash can call police traffic investigators at (818) 238-3100.
