Driver Arrested In Hit-And-Run That Killed Wheelchair-Bound Man
POMONA (AP) — Police in Pomona say an anonymous tip led to the arrest of an unlicensed driver suspected in a hit-and-run crash that killed a homeless man in a wheelchair.
Sgt. Robert DeVee says 43-year-old Alejandro Ambriz of Ontario was arrested Monday on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.
Investigators suspect Ambriz was driving a gray Saab involved in the fatal crash late Sunday on a commercial street near downtown.
Ambriz is being held on $1.05 million bail and is scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday.
Charles Atterbury died at the scene. Atterbury, 49, was homeless and had lost a leg when he was hit by a car two years ago.
DeVee says Ambriz does not have a valid driver's license.
Ambriz had called a friend to pick him up and recover the vehicle, which was taken to a nearby auto body shop in Montclair where it was being stored, DeVee said. It wasn't immediately clear if the friend is being investigated.
An anonymous witness came forward after news of the crash was publicized and assisted the officers with some missing details of the investigation, leading to Amriz' identity and arrest, DeVee said.
