Power Restored To Thousands After Massive Tree Topples In Silver Lake

SILVER LAKE (CBSLA.com) — Power was restored to homes in Silver Lake Thursday nearly three hours after a massive eucalyptus tree fell onto a street.

The downed tree, approximately 50 to 60 years old, fell about 6 a.m. in the 2100 block of Griffith Park Boulevard.

The tree took down power, phone, and cable lines, knocking out electricity to more than 2,000 residents. It also blocked traffic and damaged some cars.

"It was just a massive loud whoosh and boom, because the telephone pole snapped at the same time," resident John Engelke said.

Councilman Tom LaBonge, who helped crews clean up the mess, was startled when the incident occurred.

"My wife and I heard a big loud bang and the lights went out, we live right by here," he said.

A total of 2,374 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers were impacted.

All power was restored by 9:50 a.m.
