Dog Alerts Santa Ana Family To House Fire

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A little dog was being called a hero Wednesday morning after she alerted her family to a house fire in Orange County.

Crews responded around 1:30 a.m. to a home in the 1200 block of S. Garnsey Street in Santa Ana, according to the OC Fire Authority.

A family of eight was asleep inside the home when their dog, Foxy, alerted them of the danger.

"She started barking and barking which woke up one of my sons which he actually woke everybody up. By the time we got up, the whole house was filled with black smoke and you could see the fire," resident Vera Mendez said.

The fire was declared a knockdown at 2:15 a.m. The house was deemed a total loss with damages estimated to be approximately $300,000, officials said.

The American Red Cross was assisting the family.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
