Dodgers Finalize 13-Player Deal With Braves, Marlins

ATLANTA (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Dodgers made a splash this week by completing a 13-player deal with the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves.

The Dodgers added pitchers Mat Latos from the Marlins, along with Alex Wood, Luis Avilan and Jim Johnson from the Atlanta Braves.

Latos was acquired by the Marlins from the Cincinnati Reds last season and has been in the majors since 2009, when he came up with the San Diego Padres. He has battled some injuries over his seven-year career, although since returning from the disabled list this season, he is 3-3 in 55 2/3 innings pitched and has not allowed more than five earned runs in any of his seven starts.

Alex Wood is a left-handed starting pitcher who is a free agent at the end of this season. Wood brings added depth to the Dodgers rotation and helps fill the holes that Carlos Frias, Hyun-Jin Ryu, and Brandon Beachy have left after succumbing to injuries.

Wood is 7-6 this season, with a 3.54 ERA in 119 1/3 innings pitched, and 20 games started. He came into the league in 2013 with the Braves after playing his collegiate baseball at the University of Georgia. The 24-year old hopes to be a mainstay in the Dodgers' rotation as the team looks toward the playoffs.

Also acquired in the deal was Marlins first-baseman Michael Morse, Braves prospect Jose Peraza and injured pitcher Bronson Arroyo.

The Dodgers gave up highly touted Cuban import Hector Olivera, who signed a massive, $63.5 million deal this past off-season. Olivera received a $28 million signing bonus from the Dodgers when he signed.

The Braves also received pitchers Paco Rodriguez, Zachary Bird and Miami's Competitive Balance Round A Pick (34th overall), which the Dodgers received from the Marlins for taking on Morse and Latos.

The Marlins received three minor-league pitchers, Kevin Guzman, Jeff Brigham, and Victor Araujo, as well as the $14.3 million in cap relief they shed from trading Latos and Morse to the Dodgers.
