DJ, Music Producer Steve Aoki Celebrates Downtown LA With Tribute Concert

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  —  Grammy-nominated producer and deejay Steve Aoki shut down Broadway in downtown Los Angeles Saturday and hosted a concert celebrating that area's revitalization.

Although Aoki is an Orange County native, he loves the downtown area and dedicated the night -- and rollicking concert -- to Los Angeles.

KCAL9's Laurie Perez attended the concert and talked to Aoki and enthusiastic fans.

The evening was much more than just having a good time, she reported.

Thousands packed into two Broadway blocks.

Musicians like Travis Barker -- billed as a spcial guest -- were signed up to take part.

Aoki took to the stage about 10 p.m. and whipped the already wild crowd into a frenzy. He was hoping to make an impact that will last long after the last chord was played.

He was clear on why he wanted to share his love and support of downtown LA.

"I love LA," said Aoki, "so much is happening here."

In order to get a ticket for Saturday's concert, fans had to sign up for information about Mayor Eric Garcetti's volunteer corps, a program that connects people with skills and time to LA groups and services that need them. The concert was offered by Aoki in conjunction with the city of Los Angeles, Garcetti and councilmember Jose Huizar.

The fans love that he loves LA.

"Not only is is true talent, and good, but showing him as a good person is amazing as well," said Daniel Salgado.

They came for the music but Aoki is hoping the fans are leaving with a mission.

"It's of interest to everyone since we are citizens here," said fan John Timson.
