Divers Search For Missing Swimmer Near Santa Monica Pier

SANTA M)NICA (CBSLA.com) — Divers are scanning the water near the Santa Monica Pier for a missing swimmer, authorities said.

The swimmer was reported missing just after 8 p.m., according to Desmond Shaw reporting in Sky9.

Officials are conducting the search from the air, as well.

LA County Fire is on scene heading up the rescue effort. Santa Monica Police were also in the water searching for the swimmer.

Lifeguards are keeping people out of the water.

Officials confirmed to CBS2/KCAL9 that the man intentionally jumped into the water.

Witnesses told CBS2's Cristy Fajardo that two brothers, perhaps intoxicated, were arguing when one jumped into the water.

The search for the 25-year-old man was called off just before 11 p.m., she reported.

Witnesses said they saw the man try to unsuccessfully pull himself onto a buoy. The missing man's brother also tried to swim out to find his brother but lifeguards had to stop him, she reported.

Authorities said the search for the man would resume at first light Monday. They are now calling it a recovery mission.

[[Update] At 11:25 p.m., authorities announced the "missing" man had actually been found safe in a nearby parking structure. No one saw him leave the water and there was no word on how he got to the structure or if he knew people were looking for him.
