Detectives Probe Fatal Shooting In Venice By Suspect Wearing 'Star Wars' Mask

VENICE (CBSLA.com) —  Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances of a fatal shooting in Venice where the suspect reportedly wore a "Star Wars" mask.

The shooting occurred around 4:10 p.m. at Brooks and Seventh Street, officials said.

The victim, described as a Latino in his 30s who may have been part of a construction crew, was declared dead at the scene. He died from a single gunshot wound, reported KCAL9's Elsa Ramon.

The victim was shot in the middle of the street.

The suspect was also wearing a black hoodie, black sunglasses and gray shorts. He was described as a black male, 25-30, and 5-foot-9.

Police later said that reports the suspect was wearing a "Star Wars" mask turned out to be erroneous.

As of 8 p.m., police didn't have a suspect in custody. The weapon, believed to be a revolver, was not recovered.

As of 10 p.m., the location was still an active crime scene. People who lived behind the crime scene tape realized they weren't being allowed to go home.

Ramon spoke to a resident who only wanted to be identified as Ryan, who said he was aware of Venice's "storied" history and said the crime had him "freaked out a little bit."
