Deputy Wounded, Suspect Later Killed In Walnut Park Shootings

WALNUT PARK (CBSLA.com) — A man suspected of wounding a deputy in a shooting in Walnut Park has been shot and killed by deputies, it was reported Saturday.

The incident unfolded about 4:10 a.m. at the intersection of Pacific Boulevard and Grand Avenue, according to a news release issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

According to authorities, the deputy had attempted to make contact with a pedestrian who allegedly produced a firearm, and shot the deputy. Although the deputy returned fire, it was unclear whether the suspect was struck at that point.

The suspect then allegedly fled on foot, prompting authorities to set up a containment area. The suspect was later found in a trash dumpster in the 2700 block of Grand Avenue allegedly with a gun, prompting a deputy to open fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The statement indicated that the deputy had sustained a non-life threatening wound, and has since been released from the hospital.

Deputies are interviewing witnesses as the investigation continues.
