Deputies Take Driver Suspected In Carjacking Into Custody After Wild Pursuit

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies pursued a driver Wednesday in South Los Angeles suspected in a carjacking that took place in the Compton area.

The driver in a gold pickup with a camper-style shell circled surface street in South LA while deputies attempted successfully to deploy spike strips to puncture tires and end the pursuit. A one point during the pursuit, a punctured rear tire shredded from the pickup's steel rim, sending spectacular showers of sparks across the road.

The driver was suspected of stealing a vehicle at knifepoint and of running into a Sheriff's Department vehicle.

The pursuit ended about 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Bicycle Club in Bell Gardens, where the female driver surrendered and was taken into custody.
