Deputies: Dentist Arrested For Allegedly Setting Fire To 2 Camarillo Dental Offices

CAMARILLO (CBSLA.com) — A 63-year-old dentist remained in custody on Saturday for allegedly setting two dental offices on fire.

According to the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, detectives served a search warrant on Friday at the residence of Leopold Weinstein, of Moorpark.

Detectives explained their investigation began in June 2014, when large amounts of flammable liquids were found on the roof of a dental building with obvious intentions of being used to commit arson.

About two weeks later, arson was set at a second dental building, however, investigators were left with very few clues.

According to deputies, Weinstein was identified after his vehicle was observed by a concerned citizen near one of the dental offices at an odd time of day.

Detectives explained they were able to match his vehicle to a description provided by witnesses in previous incidents.

On Wednesday, Weinstein allegedly committed a sixth act of arson at the first dental building that was originally targeted.

Police said surveillance video positively identified him committing the act of setting fire to the building.

Weinstein was subsequently arrested on Friday for three counts of arson of a structure, three counts of attempted arson of a structure, and possession of a silencer.

He is being held on $250,000 at the Ventura County Sheriff's Main Jail.

Authorities reported although Weinstein's motives were not entirely clear, it appears the fires were financially motivated, detectives added.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
