Two Separate Water Main Breaks Along Sunset Blvd Caused Traffic Backup

WEST HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A pair of separate water main breaks made for a longer commute Monday along Sunset Boulevard.

The first break occurred Friday afternoon in West Hollywood at Sunset and La Cienega Boulevard, with about 9,600 gallons of water flooding the street every minute.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews spent roughly six hours patching up the 36-inch pipe, which was installed in 1916.

Fresh concrete was poured on the area Saturday, which takes about two to three days to cure. Crews must then pour new asphalt and repaint the road.

West Hollywood city officials do not anticipate reopening all lanes of Sunset Boulevard until at least Tuesday.

The second break occurred Sunday evening on Sunset Boulevard and Charing Cross Road.

The break of the 12-inch pipe affected about 20 customers in the Holmby Hills area.

Repairs to that break were completed just after 2 p.m. Monday.

Motorists were advised to avoid using Sunset Boulevard during peak traffic times.

The breaks mark the second and third times that pipes have burst on Sunset Boulevard in the past few months. The biggest incident, in late July near UCLA, led to flooding of two parking garages and Pauley Pavilion.
