Investigation Into Crash That Killed 2 Children Continues In Azusa

AZUSA (CBSLA.com) — Police Sunday morning were still on the scene of a crash that took the lives of two children on the Fourth of July.

Investigators say a family was traveling southbound on San Gabriel Canyon Road, near Mountain Laurel Way, just after 7:30 p.m. when the driver lost control of the SUV and went over the side of a mountain, falling approximately 50 feet.

Five people were inside the vehicle, including a 32-year-old man, a 32-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl, all of whom survived and were transported to a local hospital, Azusa police say. Two children, ages 8 and 12, died at the scene.

Late Sunday, the deceased were identified as 8-year-old Christopher Caliz Martines and 12-year-old Andrea Caliz Martinez.

Investigators believe speed was a factor but have not ruled out alcohol as a factor as well.

They say no one in the car was wearing a seat belt.

Police have not confirmed the relationship of all victims.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
