SANTA MONICA (CBSLA.com) — A dead 10-foot-long, 1,200-pound newborn gray whale washed ashore in Santa Monica on Tuesday.

The whale, which washed up near lifeguard tower 12, was taken off the beach by Santa Monica city maintenance workers.

An employee of the Natural History Museum was called to Santa Monica to investigate the reason for the whale's death, according to county lifeguard Lydia Barillas.
