3 Hospitalized After Sedan Crashes Into Sheriff Deputy's Cruiser In Long Beach

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Three people were seriously injured Tuesday after a sedan collided with a patrol vehicle in Long Beach.

The crash unfolded just after midnight in the 6100 block of Paramount Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

A preliminary investigation revealed the sedan crossed over the center median and struck the sheriff deputy's patrol cruiser head-on.

"The collision caused severe damage to the sheriff's patrol car, requiring fire department personnel to use hydraulic rescue tools to extract the deputy and the arrestee," said Sgt. Bob Boese.

Paramedics transported the deputy, a suspect who was being transported to the Lakewood Station, and the driver of the sedan to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

All three men have been listed in serious condition.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Lakewood deputy who was seriously injured in a traffic collision and to his family during this difficult time," Sheriff Jim McDonnell said. "We hope he can rest and have a speedy recovery. We appreciate the tremendous support from the community and in the department as we come together to support one of our own."

Paramount Boulevard will remain closed between Artesia and South until further notice, police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Anyone with information about this incident has been urged to contact the Long Beach Police Department at (562) 570-7355.
