Couple Plead Guilty In Supplement Misbranding Case

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The husband-and-wife owners of a Los Angeles County nutritional supplement company pleaded guilty to federal charges stemming from the illegal importation of so-called royal jelly from China under deceptive labels.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Lynn Leung and Denian Fu each entered pleas Monday to counts of introducing misbranded food into interstate commerce with the intent to defraud or mislead.

Prosecutors say the couple's Nu-Health Products Company falsified documents and labels.

Royal jelly — a secretion produced by the glands of worker honey bees — has been studied for a variety of medicinal uses, including asthma and hay fever.

The indictment also alleged that the defendants illegally imported seal oil capsules in violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Each could face up to three years in federal prison when they are sentenced Feb. 1.
