Convicted Killer Charged In Old LA Jail Slaying

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man serving a life sentence for murder and robbery has been charged with killing a fellow prisoner at the Los Angeles County jail 17 years ago.

The District Attorney's Office reported Thursday that Jaime Vidales has been charged with killing Miguel Sanchez in July 1997. If convicted he faces life in prison without possibility of parole.

Prosecutors say Sanchez was jailed on a sexual assault charge when he was found strangled on a bunk bed in a dorm room occupied by prisoners.

Vidales was in the jail awaiting trial on the murder and robbery charges.

Prosecutors say another prisoner helped Vidales kill Sanchez.

That prisoner was later found slain, also in the jail.
