Chargers Select TCU CB Jason Verrett With 25th Overall Pick In NFL Draft

SAN DIEGO (CBSLA.com/AP) -- The San Diego Chargers have taken TCU cornerback Jason Verrett with the 25th pick in the NFL draft.

The Chargers, who have to face Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos twice a season, had one of the most porous pass defenses last season.

"We're really, really pleased to get Jason," said Chargers' General Manger Tom Telesco. "We talked about going into the offseason wanting to get faster, more playmakers and really wanting to help the defense a little bit and Jason embodies all of that. He's a cover corner, explosive, quick and can run. He's very instinctive too and he's very tough. He's tough and he plays big. He plays in a good conference against a lot of really good receivers. We couldn't be happier to have him with the Chargers."
Verrett is expected to start opposite Shareece Wright. Verrett is only 5-foot-9 and 189 pounds.

The 22-year-old will not practice with the team immediately as he is still recovering from shoulder surgery in March, but should be ready for training-camp on July 25.
