The stabbing occurred at 5:30 a.m. in the 4700 block of Slauson Avenue, according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies at the scene told CBSLA that security video appeared to show a man jump over the counter and stab the clerk, identified as Nelly Baez, several times without provocation.

Her coworker and several customers rushed to her aid, eventually helping pin the man down and call 911.

"Simply no rhyme or reason to it," said Sheriff's Lt. Barry Hall. "He's standing there drinking a soda for one second, and without warning, attacks the clerk."

One witness told CBSLA they have seen the man at the store multiple times. A second woman was also treated for stab wounds.

The suspect, who was not immediately identified, was taken into custody at the scene, deputies told CBSLA.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Baez.
