Carson To Kickoff Petition Drive For NFL Stadium

CARSON (CBSLA.com) — The city of Carson Thursday will begin the first step in closing a deal to bring an NFL stadium to its city.

A petition drive created by the business coalition Carson2gether will kick off at 11 a.m. at Phantom Carriage, 18525 S. Main Street.

The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders announced in February they will partner up to build and share a privately-financed $1.7 billion stadium off the 405 Freeway and Del Amo Boulevard if they do not strike a deal with their current cities.

The plan would include turning an 168-acre site into a 70,000-seat stadium with 18,000 parking spots.

Mayor Jim Dear and several councilmembers are expected to be the first registered voters to sign the petition. The city needs about 8,000 signatures to put the plan on the ballot.

NFL officials have said there are no current plans to move a team to Los Angeles and have also noted that any team moving would need approval from three-quarters of the league's owners.
