Coronavirus: San Bernardino County Reopening Parks, Other Recreational Areas

CHINO (CBSLA) — San Bernardino County opened county-operated parks on Saturday and allowed the opening of city and privately owned parks, lakes, trails and golf courses on a limited scale.

In so doing, however, officials are asking the public to practice social distancing and wear face masks.

By 7 a.m., a line of cars already appeared at Prado Regional Park with residents anxious to enjoy the outdoors.

Fishermen lined up hours before the park opened its doors for the first time in more than five weeks.

Other activities allowed include hiking, biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, tennis, dog parks, and parking in parking lots for passive recreation.

Officials warn that this move is not an invitation to gather in large groups but note that's it's a welcome change for people whose livelihoods have been impacted by the coronavirus.

"We've been asking a lot of our residents and this has been really hard on them especially those who lost their jobs, their businesses" said San Bernardino County Fourth District Supervisor Curt Hagman.

Even though the county parks are officially open, there are many things inside the parks that remain closed as officials try and encourage physical distancing.

There's tape up blocking off certain areas. Restrooms are closed, skate parks have been graveled, pools, splash pads and large picnic areas are also shut down.

Venues that remain prohibited amid these changes include outdoor amphitheaters, public or community swimming beaches, pools, and spas, campgrounds or camp areas, amusement parks or carnivals, and outdoor conference centers.
