Vigil Marks 1-Year Anniversary Of Death Of Trader Joe's Assistant Store Manager Killed In Standoff

SILVER LAKE (CBSLA) — Sunday marks one year since the deadly Trader Joe's standoff in Silver Lake.

A candlelight vigil was  held at 4 p.m. at the Silver Lake Community Church in honor of Melyda Corado, the 27-year-old store manager who was killed by a police bullet during a shootout with a suspect.

CBS2/KCAL9 reporter Cristy Fajardo said, "The church was packed. There was even an overflow section."

When people walked into the service they were given ribbons and t-shirts.

Many of those mourning already were wearing Trader Joe's t-shirts in her honor.

The emotional vigil was followed by a celebration of her life with food and music. On Sunday evening, there was a candlelight vigil and walk from the church  to Trader Joe's.

The suspect, identified as Gene Atkins, is expected to appear in court next month for a preliminary hearing.
