California Bill Would Extend Nanny Overtime Law

SACRAMENTO (AP) — The California Senate is backing legislation to permanently extend a temporary law requiring employers to pay domestic workers overtime pay.

The 2013 law requires that nannies, caregivers and housekeepers be paid time-and-a-half if they work more than nine hours in a day or more than 45 hours in a week. The current temporary mandate expires at the end of the year.

SB1015 would extend it permanently. It cleared the Senate in a 25-10 vote Thursday and goes next to the Assembly.

Democratic Sen. Connie Leyva of Chino says the legislation would ensure that domestic workers are treated with dignity.

Baby sitters are exempt from the mandate.
