California Bill Protects Kids From Domestic Abuse

SACRAMENTO (AP) — The state Senate has approved a measure designed to help protect children from domestic violence during court proceedings and after abusers are released from custody.

Sen. Fran Pavley, a Democrat from Agoura Hills, says her SB910 would close a loophole in state law that excludes children from coverage under protective orders for domestic violence.

The measure passed 36-0 on Thursday and now goes to the Assembly.

Courts can issue protective orders to guard spouses during criminal proceedings and for up to 10 years after abusers are convicted.

But a narrow definition of domestic violence in current law means the protection does not extend to all children.

Families must seek a new order in family court, which Pavley says is often difficult and puts children in danger until one is issued.
