Calif. Lawmaker Behind New Push To Get Rid Of Daylight Saving Time

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A Northern California lawmaker is behind a new push to get rid of daylight saving time.

Assemblymember Kansen Chu (D-San Jose) introduced a new bill that would keep the state on Pacific Standard Time year-round.

Chu says daylight saving time was put in place over 60 years ago to help farmers and lower energy bills.

He points to recent studies that show energy bills have actually gone up along with car crashes and crime.

Susan Gerardi is all for it. She says she doesn't feel safe enough to exercise before work.

"I usually walk in the morning so it's too dark for me to walk so I have to wait," she said.

But not everyone is on board.

"I think he should leave well enough alone," said a business owner in Newport Beach. "The sun going down earlier, I think that's pretty much saying, 'Let's go home.' "
