Crews Stop Forward Progress After Brush Fire Breaks Out In Sylmar

SYLMAR (CBSLA) — Los Angeles Fire Department crews battled a brush fire Tuesday night in Sylmar.

According to the department, the blaze started at about 7:47 p.m. and appeared to be centered in a nursery on the northbound side of the 210 freeway with extension to the southbound side of the freeway.

The department said fire crews were making "good progress" as of 8:30 p.m. and had released air resources following multiple water drops.

Shortly after 9 p.m., fire crews were able to stop all forward progress of the blaze.

Crews were able to defend all nearby structures from damage and no injuries were reported.

The fire was the latest in a series seen as a Santa Ana wind event battered the area Tuesday, causing destruction across the Southland as trees were ripped from the ground.

"My neighbor heard a crack, and he says, 'I think a branch fell down from my tree,'" one man said. "As you can see, that's not a branch."

The heavy winds and dry brush kept fire crews busy with blazes breaking out in Ventura, San Dimas and Newhall, while thousands were left without power.

According to Southern California Edison, power has been shut off to approximately 67,000 customers. A spokesperson said it would be restored as soon as the wind and the risk diminsh.
