Report: Jamie Spears Files To Step Down As Conservator Of Daughter's Estate

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Britney Spears's father Jamie Spears has reportedly filed a petition to step down as the conservator of his daughter's estate.

Jamie Spears has been in charge of his daughter's affairs for the last 13 years and has resisted efforts to have him suspended or removed from the post.

"I go from excitement to suspicion very fast," said Jared Lipscomb, a podcast host. "I'm always like, is this too good to be true?"

In court papers obtained by CNN, his attorney, Vivian Thoreen, said that the circumstances have changed and that reasons for creating the conservatorship may "no longer exist" and that if Britney wants to handle her own life, she should get the chance to.

In a statement to CNN, Britney Spears's attorney said:

This filing represents another legal victory for Britney Spears -- a massive one -- as well as vindication for Ms. Spears...It appears that Mr. Spears believes he can try to avoid accountability and justice, including sitting for a sworn deposition and answering other discovery under oath.

The filing comes just weeks before a Sept. 29 court hearing.
