Boy Scouts To Turn Over Files In Sex Case
SANTA BARBARA (AP) — The Boy Scouts of America must turn over 20 years of old personnel files to a plaintiff in a California sexual abuse lawsuit.
Santa Barbara County Superior Court Judge Donna Geck made the ruling Friday in a dispute over the authenticity of Boy Scout files from 1971 to 1991 that were obtained by the plaintiff's attorney from a third party.
The files, along with another batch stretching from 1991 to 2011, will remain sealed, and it's unclear how many will actually be allowed as evidence at a trial set for October.
The plaintiff, a former Scout who claims he was molested by a volunteer Scout leader, hopes the 40 years of internal files will show the Boy Scouts were aware of sexual abuse and didn't do enough to protect children.
