Bill Cracking Down On Charity Scammers Awaits Governor's Signature
HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A bill that cracks down on charity scammers is just waiting for the governor's signature.
AB 20-77, sponsored by Huntington Beach Assemblyman Travis Allen, targets groups that prey on the good intentions of donors while actually passing on very little of the money to the charities they claim to represent.
"These people will call you at your house, and they'll say, look I'm representing such-and-such charity, like maybe the Police Protective League or something like this, but only 2 percent of that money will actually go into police departments," Allen said.
The bill authorizes the attorney general to use money already available to enforce anti-scam laws already in place.
There's no indication yet whether the governor will sign the bill.
