State Route 38 Reopens After Heavy Rains Trigger Mudslide In El Dorado Burn Scar Near Big Bear

BIG BEAR (CBSLA) — Heavy downpours Friday across the Inland Empire prompted the closure of State Route 38 from Forest Falls to Lake Williams in Big Bear following a rockfall. It was reopened Friday night.

Drivers were told to avoid the area and use State Route 18 or State Route 330 instead. Caltrans said the roadway was not expected to reopen until Saturday at the earliest.

The National Weather Service has issued flash flood warnings until late Friday night for both Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Around 9:05 p.m., Caltrans tweeted an update, saying SR-38 was open to Big Bear with escorts all night up and down from Angelus Oaks to Jenks Lk West.

Drivers were encouraged to reduce speeds. Roads were still extremely muddy. Drivers were asked to use alternate routes at 330 and 18, if possible.
