Bicyclist Fatally Struck By Passenger Van In Mid-City Crash

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police Friday investigated a fatal traffic collision that happened in the Mid-City area.

Around 11:43 p.m. on Thursday, officers were sent to the area of Fairfax Avenue and Sawyer Street for report of a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicycle.

Upon their arrival, authorities learned that a passenger van struck a bicyclist in the area.

Paramedics pronounced the bicyclist -- described as a Hispanic man believed to be around 55-years-old -- dead at the scene. The victim's identity is being withheld pending family notification.

The driver remained at the scene. Authorities said he was believed to be under the influence of drugs, and was transported to the station for further questioning.

According to police, the bicycle had lights on the front and back sides in addition to lights on the wheels.

No arrests have been made at this time.

Fairfax Avenue remains closed between Venice Boulevard and Sawyer Street until further notice.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
