Bicyclist Fatally Struck By Suspected DUI Driver In Oxnard

OXNARD (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a bicyclist was fatally struck in an early morning collision with a vehicle in Oxnard.

The accident happened about 2:09 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Rose Avenue and Raiders Way.

When officers arrived on scene, they found the bicyclist in the roadway.

"The [Volkswagen] GTI fled the scene of the collision with the bicycle still stuck underneath the vehicle," Oxnard police said in a department statement.

The victim, identified as 43-year-old Gerald Zoleta Garcia, sustained fatal injuries, according to police.

The statement said the suspect vehicle was located a short distance away. The alleged driver was identified by police as 29-year-old Policarpio Diaz of Oxnard.

Authorities said Diaz was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony hit and run, vehicular manslaughter, and two outstanding misdemeanor DUI warrants.
