Beverly Hills Bans Residents From Filling New Swimming Pools

BEVERLY HILLS (CBSLA.com) — Residents living in California's most famous zip code will no longer be allowed to fill new swimming pools and could face $1,000 fines for water violations.

The Beverly Hills City Council approved stricter water regulations Tuesday night amid criticism that some of the state's more upscale cities had been excused from Gov. Jerry Brown's order to dramatically slash water use to help deal with the state's three-year drought.

The modified water conservation program is aimed at meeting Brown's state-mandated goal of a 36 percent reduction in water use, according to city officials.

Under the new provisions, only preexisting swimming pools will be allowed to be refilled, while lawn watering will be limited to two days a week per household down from three, according to officials. Violators could face fines up to $1,000.

To encourage conservation, the city also set up an online portal to help Beverly Hills residents track their water usage.
