Bees Attack Roofer, Neighbor In Costa Mesa

COSTA MESA (CBSLA.com) — Thousands of bees swarmed on a roofing contractor and another man across the street in Costa Mesa Thursday, landing both men in a hospital.

A man working on a roof at a home in the 800 block of Laird Place apparently disturbed a hive of bees at about 8 a.m., Costa Mesa Fire Battalion Chief Bill Kershaw said.

A resident across the street was also attacked, Kershaw said.

The roofer was stung at least 50 times, and the resident at least 10 times.

Both men complained of breathing problems and were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Firefighters sprayed foam on the bees to subdue them until workers from Bee Busters could arrive to remove the hive from under the roof, Kershaw said.
