Bayside Drive Beach Closed After 50-Gallon Sewage Spill From Coast Guard Ship

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Swimmers were warned to stay out of the water at Bayside Drive Beach along Newport Bay after a small sewage spill from a U.S. Coast Guard vessel.

A 50-gallon sewage spill from a U.S. Coast Guard vessel prompted the closure, which extends from Bayside Drive Beach to 600 feet upbay, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency.

The spill occurred at about 8 a.m. Wednesday when a line broke while the ship was pumping its wastewater out of the holding tank, according to the Orange County Register.

The beach is expected to remain closed for up to two days, or until testing shows that bacteria has returned to acceptable levels.
