Police Shoot Armed Barricade Suspect In Sylmar

SYLMAR (CBSLA.com) — A barricade suspect who assaulted a police officer in Sylmar remains hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday.

Around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, officers were sent to a home for a report of a man with a mental illness, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Upon their arrival, authorities learned a Hispanic man believed to be in his early 20s was barricaded inside the residence.

A SWAT team responded to the location with a psychologist to help with negotiations, which continued until a little after 1 a.m., officers said.

At one point, the suspect exited the residence. SWAT team members used a Taser and fired bean bag rounds at him, but the force was ineffective.

The suspect then approached an officer on the scene and used a sharp object to cut his forearm. An officer-involved shooting subsequently occurred.

Paramedics transported the officer to a hospital, where he received medical treatment and was released.

The suspect was also transported to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. He is currently undergoing surgery.

KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou reported authorities are investigating officers' use of force in the incident.

Detectives have not yet recovered the suspect's weapon at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
