Armed suspects try to rob armored truck, fail to get any of the money inside

Two suspects ambush armored truck in Carson

Authorities are investigating reports of a robbery committed on an armored vehicle in Carson.

According to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, a deputy arrived to the scene just before 10:35 a.m. after being flagged down by witnesses.

The deputy happened to be driving by shortly after the suspects left.

"There was a deputy driving northbound here on Figueroa from 228th street," said Deputy Miguel Meza. "She was flagged down by citizens stating that there was a shooting in the area."

Upon their arrival, they discovered that an armored car was the target of the robbery.

Deputies detailed that two male suspects approached the two armored guards, who were making a delivery in the area. The suspects were armed with a handgun and a rifle.

The suspects reportedly fired several shots at the guards, one of which was struck by a bullet, suffering a non-life-threatening injury. The other guard safely made it back into the vehicle. Neither guard is believed to have fired at the suspects.

After the shooting, the suspects fled from the area in an unknown vehicle driven by a female suspect. They did not obtain any of the $3 million stashed inside the armored truck.

Deputies revealed that the Major Crimes Unit had taken over the investigation.

This is the third notable armored truck robbery in Southern California in 2022. In early August, an armored truck guard was shot during an attempted robbery outside of the Hustler Casino in Gardena. In July, an armored vehicle headed for Pasadena, carrying millions of dollars worth of jewelry, was robbed

"Yeah, unfortunately, there's an increase of people with guns and misusing their weapons," said Meza. "Unfortunately people suffer consequences because of those actions."

This is a developing story. Check back for details.
