Attorney: Driver Who Surrendered In Deadly Street Racing Crash Is 'Blameless'
CHATSWORTH (CBSLA.com) — A new video posted on a social media website may reveal that the 21-year-old man who turned himself in was not actually the driver in a deadly crash.
Henry Michael Gevorgyan was booked on suspicion of murder Feb. 28 a few days after officials identified him as the driver of a Mustang involved in a hit-and-run in Chatsworth.
The incident took place around 2:15 a.m. Feb. 26 at Plummer Street and Canoga Avenue.
Police believe two cars were street racing when the driver of a 2014 modified Ford Mustang lost control and ran into a crowd of spectators.
One man was killed at the scene, and the other died at a local hospital. A third man suffered serious injuries.
Both drivers fled the scene, according to police.
Although Gevorgyan turned himself in, a video was posted March 1 on the Facebook page 818_1320 alleging he was standing on the street flagging the drivers at the beginning of the race.
"So LAPD says he was driving... but in the video he can be seen standing in the middle.. ok . . . #FreeHendo," the comment said.
Gevorgyan's attorney told the Los Angeles Times he was blameless in the crash and was just trying to do the right thing when he surrendered to police. He was being held on $2 million bail.
Police continue to search for the driver of the second vehicle.
