Asst. Sheriff Demoted Following Race For LA County Sheriff

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The L.A. County assistant sheriff has been demoted following his recent candidacy for sheriff.

James "Jim" Hellmold ran against several candidates to replace Sheriff Lee Baca in Tuesday's election.

He finished behind Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell and former Undersheriff Paul Tanaka, who will advance to a runoff in November.

Interim Sheriff John Scott has not commented directly on the reason for the demotion.

The LASD issued a statement Thursday saying Scott remains committed to implementing reforms, saying in part, "The sheriff is a big proponent of Good to Great principles. He believes that right people should be on the right bus in the right seat. He will continue to evaluate and assess the structure and personnel for the greater good of the department."
