2 Men Arrested In 2006 Pinyon Pines Triple Murder

PALM SPRINGS (CBSLA.com) — Riverside County sheriff's deputies have arrested two men on suspicion of homicide in a 2006 triple murder in Pinyon Pines.

Cristian Smith, 25, was arrested Tuesday at Palm Springs Airport in connection to the Sept. 17 murder of 18-year-old Becky Friedli, her mother Vickie Friedli, and Vickie's longtime boyfriend, Jon Howard.

The three were murdered in their Pinyon Pines home near Idyllwild. The house was then set on fire.

Riverside County Sheriff's investigators also arrested 25-year-old Robert Pape in Salton City Tuesday afternoon.

No motive was given in the cold case, which gained renewed attention in 2012 when the victims' family enlisted a team of 10 retired law enforcement investigators to help.

The pro bono team, led by former detective and private investigator Luis A. Bolaños, is comprised of former sheriff's deputies, district attorney's investigators, and FBI agents.

A third arrest may be coming in the case.

No other details were immediately available.
