Knife-Wielding Man Shot, Killed By Deputy In Riverside

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) – A vandalism suspect armed with a knife was shot and killed by a deputy Wednesday afternoon in the Woodcrest neighborhood of Riverside.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department reports a deputy responding to a vandalism call in the 15800 block of Wood Road at 3:49 p.m. came upon a male suspect.

When the deputy tried to contact the suspect, the man began to throw large rocks. The rocks struck both the deputy and the patrol car, the sheriff's department said. At some point during the confrontation, the suspect pulled out a knife and began to advance on the deputy.

"The suspect refused verbal commands to drop the knife and a deputy involved shooting occurred," the sheriff's department wrote in a news release.

The suspect was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was not released.

The deputy was placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

Sheriff's homicide detectives are investigating.
