Armed Suspect Fatally Shot In Van Nuys; Two LAPD Officers Injured

VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com) — A 30-year-old man was killed and two officers were injured during a shooting that took place in Van Nuys on Friday.

Just before midnight on Thursday, two officers were sent to the 14600 block of Valerio Street near the corner of Vista Del Monte Avenue for report of an argument between neighbors, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Upon their arrival, authorities became involved in an altercation with a man who armed himself with a four-foot metal contractor's leveling tool from somewhere inside of the home.

"During that altercation, a suspect armed himself with a type of hard object," said Sgt. Barry Montgomery. "He began striking one of the officers in the head and shoulder areas. It was at that time that an officer involved shooting did occur."

At least one officer fired at the man during the shooting.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

According to neighbors, the home has been vacant for months.

Authorities said the man may possibly be homeless.

Both officers were transported to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.

Valerio Street will remain closed until further notice.
