Suspect Critically Wounded After Being Shot By Off-Duty Officer In Smart & Final Parking Lot

ONTARIO (CBSLA.com) — An off-duty Los Angeles County probation officer on Friday night shot a man who allegedly tried to carjack him at knife-point.

Ontario police say it happened around 9:40 p.m. in the parking lot of a Smart & Final, at Grove Avenue and Fourth Street.

Adrian Leatherman, 26, allegedly approached the officer and his wife as they were loading groceries into car and demanded they give him a ride.

The probation officer refused, prompting Leatherman to threaten them with a knife.

The officer drew his gun and ordered the suspect down on the ground.

Leatherman initially proved cooperative but then began to struggle with the officer, who fired a single shot into the suspect's upper torso.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The officer and his wife were not injured.

Leatherman faces attempted carjacking charges.
