Arch From Demolished Sixth Street Bridge Will Be Preserved
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A section of a landmark Los Angeles bridge that's being demolished will be saved from the scrapheap.
Officials say one of the steel arches from the Sixth Street Bridge east of downtown will be placed in 12 acres of greenspace being developed under the bridge.
Removal of the arch began Wednesday.
The 3,500-foot bridge has played a supporting role in many Hollywood chase scenes but the concrete is decaying.
Crews began demolishing the 84-year-old structure in February. It's being replaced with a new roadway that should open in 2019. The project is costing around $450 million.
