Volunteers, Local Leaders Plant Trees To Celebrate Arbor Day LA

WILMINGTON (CBSLA) — Volunteers set out to plant hundreds of trees in Wilmington Saturday morning to celebrate Arbor Day.

"This is one of the communities that is heavily impacted by the port and other industry and has less trees than other communities," Rachel Malarich, a Los Angeles city forester officer, said. "So, we've gotten funding from CalFire to plant trees here in the park."

Participants included Cal Fire, City Plants, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, LA Sanitation and Environment, StreetsLA, the Department of Recreation and Parks, the LA Conservation Corps, Koreatown Youth and Community Center, North East Trees, LA Beautification Team, Tree People, A Cleaner Greener East LA and Councilmember Joe Buscaino.

A community fair was held after the volunteer tree-planting. Along with family-friendly events, food,  music and exhibits, 500 trees were given to community members to be planted in their yards.
