Animal Control Officer Finds 200-Pound Tortoise Near Hemet

HEMET (CBSLA.com) — Animal control officers are hoping the owner of a 200-pound tortoise found near Hemet will show up Thursday to claim it.

The tortoise was scooped up by a Riverside County Department of Animal Services officer Wednesday night from a Sage Road location, southeast of Hemet, spokesman John Welsh said.

The age and sex of the tortoise were not known.

The tortoise is now being held at the agency's San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus, 581 S. Grand Ave., in San Jacinto.
