Angry Parents Show Up At Middle School Questioning Why Their Kids Were Sent Home Ahead Of Vaccination Law

SILVER LAKE (CBSLA.com)  —  Half a dozen parents held up signs in front of Thomas Starr King Middle School Wednesday to complain about the school sending kids home who were not up-to-date on their vaccines.

"We're here to make a formal complaint against the  LAUSD," a parent told KCAL9's Amber Lee.

The school, located in Silver Lake, apparently sent several students home.

Jordin Johnson is parent to a 7th grader who feels the district may have jumped the gun on the state's new vaccination law that doesn't go into effect until next year.

"Yesterday, she was taken out of class for not having a proof of a tdap booster even though I had turned in a copy of a personal belief exemption form in June," said Johnson.

Another parent showed her a photo they snapped from inside the school that said, "No Shots = No School."

Officially, the LAUSD told parents to hold on.

Dr. Kimberly Uyeda with the LAUSD said students being sent home had nothing to do with law SB 277.

"You can still have an exemption for a medical reason or a personal belief reason," Uyeda said.

She chalked up what happened on Tuesday was a simple case of first-day confusion.

"We make sure all students that are in class, enrolled and attending, have all the appropriate immunizations," Uyeda said.

The district says they plan a major push to educated parents before the new law takes effect
