Alleged Gunman In LAPD West Traffic Division Shooting Dies

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A man suspected of opening fire inside the lobby of the LAPD's West Traffic Division earlier this month has died.

Daniel Yealu, 29, died overnight at Cedars Sinai Medical Center.

Yealu, who allegedly shot an officer several times, was charged April 10 with two counts of attempted murder.

Police Chief Charlie Beck said the seven-year veteran desk officer who was hit three times and was not wearing a bulletproof vest is lucky to be alive.

"An amazing story of survival," he said.

Both the officer and his partner shot back at Yealu, critically wounding him.

Yealu, a former security guard, applied to work for the LAPD in 2009, but was rejected.

Police say he said "I have a complaint" before opening fire during the April 7 incident.

Authorities say they recovered an arsenal, including hundreds of rounds of ammunition, in Yealu's Palms-area apartment. They also discovered an assault weapon in the back seat of his car.
